Welcome to Tweed Hill Homestead
We’re Shell and J, two passionate individuals who stumbled upon a remarkable legacy while searching for the perfect place to start our homesteading journey. This is our story.
I, Shell, hail from the beautiful state of Michigan, while J is a proud Pennsylvanian through and through. We met later in life through a mutual friend who cheekily remarked, “you’ll either like each other or want to kill each other.” Thankfully, we liked each other enough not only to stay alive but to get married and start a family. I moved to Pennsylvania, and we settled in the suburbs, but something was always missing.
J, despite his city upbringing, yearned for the serenity of the countryside. I, having grown up in the country, longed for open space away from the hustle and bustle of suburban life. We tried our hand at backyard homesteading, much to our neighbors’ chagrin and the constant irritation of the local code enforcement officer. While we managed to win over some neighbors with fresh produce, the code enforcement officer remained unconvinced. It became clear we needed our own land, free from prying eyes and restrictive regulations.
Homestead Hunt…
Our search spanned several years until we stumbled upon a listing for some acreage in rural Pennsylvania. It was a diamond in the rough—very, very rough. The property spanned over 20 acres, dotted with dilapidated outbuildings and a farmhouse hiding an extraordinary secret. From the outside, the house seemed like an ordinary, uninspiring farmhouse. But inside, it revealed hand-hewn, squared, 18-inch chestnut log walls! Though we’ve only uncovered one wall so far, we’re excited to reveal the rest beneath layers of horsehair plaster and paint.
A few days of research led us to the historical library, where we discovered that our new home was originally surveyed in the 1780s and granted to the Tweed family, encompassing over 400 acres at its peak.
